Why does my dachshund stink so bad?
Posted on September 2nd, 2010
I have a 6 month old miniature dachshund, I love him to death, but my God does he smell horrible. Everything about him stinks. His body, his breath and it doesn’t matter what I do. I gave him a bath yesterday and sprayed doggy cologne on him and brushed his teeth, and today he wreaks to high heaven again. He is an indoor only dog so I don’t understand why this keeps happening. Does anyone else have a dachshund or a dog with the similar problem? and what do you do to maintain the stench? Is this problem just hereditary to the dachshund bloodline? Any answers oe solutions to this problem would be greatly appreciated.
oh and before anyone goes spouting off with negative comments about my dog, he eats science diet puppy formula with the occasional treat or rawhide and like stated gets baths and his teeth brushed at least 3 times weekly.
Thanks again!
Bonnie L you are extremely rude. Please educate yourself before you respond to people’s questions. if you can’t contribute KNOWLEDGEABLE answers to serious questions you should keep your mouth shut and for your information there is such thing as mini doxies here is a website in which AKC acknowledges the breed http://www.akc.org/breeds/dachshund/index.cfm THANK YOU.
I see many other comments you have left for people where you come off as just plain miserable, so you have been blocked from answering anymore of mine, anything else from you will be reported. And as for the "crap food" comment, I feed him science diet because it’s what MY VET recommended and was bought from his office. I simply asked this question to see if it was a dachshund trait, seeing as this is my first doxie! So maybe you should quit trolling people’s questions and go get some sunlight, it might do you some good!!
Thanks to everyone else who had respectful answers….

September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amHave you tried cleaning his ears? Dogs that have the floppy ears like doxies, spaniels, beagles, bassetts…their ears smell cuz they don’t get any air in them to keep them dry.
I have 2 cockers and a beagle, have to clean all their ears about every week to keep them from stinking. I just bought ear cleaning solution fromt he pet store, and it cured the smelly’s. Good Luck!
I agree with "not afraid to try…" Vets do get incentives for selling/recommending it. While science diet isn’t the best food, it certainly isn’t the worst. May want to try something different. I feed my dogs Canidae. Check the first 4 ingredients on the bag, If they are grains or bi-products..then you need to reconsider your food.

Not Afraid to Try New Things... Says:
September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amDachshunds are actually supposed to have less of a doggy odor than other dogs.
As for the smell, it could be a number of things. He may need his anal glads expressed, or are expressing them frequently on his own, or he could have some sort of infection of his ears or skin. You may want to take him for a vet consult to either A rule out an infection and pinpoint the problem, or B figure out what type of infection is causing the smell. It may also be good to ask about the Anal glands, because those can be extremely Stinky.
As for your food, Science Diet, isn’t a great food at all. Vets receive incentives from the company to sell it. They sell the companys food and the vet gets funds from the company. While Science diet isn’t great, there are still worse.
Now might be a good time to research better dog foods, its possible that he is stinky because of his reaction to his food. Use http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ to research brands of food for your dog in the 5-6 star range. There is a large variety, and some are really affordable. I just switched my 6 month old Dachshund on to "Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul" and it has improved his coat, and over all health A LOT.

September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amask the vet- it might be that he’s just not doing too well with the science diet. i have never heard of a dachs smelling that bad, my m-i-l bred them for years, and they never smelled noticeably bad…

September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amChange the food. A dog’s diet can cause a dog to smell and that is a horrible quality of dog food. Change your dog’s diet and you might notice a huge difference. Also, only bathe him monthly, any more and it can cause skin problems. Take him to the vet. If he’s having a skin issue then that could be causing the smell.

September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amThis is not common and means that the dog has some kind of infection. My sister’s dog had the same problem and she hadn’t taken him for grooming. When she did, the groomers found a cuckle burr lodged in his teeth!
My Beagle had this last year and her sinuses and one tooth were infected. After the tooth was removed and her sinuses cleaned she smelled great.
Please get your pup checked by the vet so you can find the source of the infection.
Best to you and your puppy.

September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amIt could be an allergy to the food. He really should see a vet about this because it could also be a symptom of a much bigger problem.
also: rawhides are no good for doggie digestion.

September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amHis diet could be causing the odor, or he could have an underlying health condition that you’re unaware of.
Make an appointment with your vet for an examination. He could have a skin infection, food allergy, or just full anal glands that are seeping slowly (these cause a horrendous stench). Another common odor-causing problem is dental disease, but given his age and the fact that you brush his teeth regularly *pat on the back*, I highly doubt this is the problem (not to say I haven’t seen some small breeds with awful teeth at under a year old).
If his health is in check, you can try changing foods. Be sure to change his diet gradually, over about a weeks’ time:
Days 1-2: 75% old diet/25% new diet
Days 3-4: 50%/50%
Days 5-6: 25%/75%
Day 7: 100% newChanging foods gradually will prevent G.I. upset.

September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amMost likely he has a skin infection. You should bring him to the vet for a skin scraping that will confirm that. He would need special baths and medication.

September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amProbably stinks because you are feeding crap food like Science Diet. No such thing as a mini Doxie, it’s a poorly bred dog from an unreputable backyard greeder. Ask your vet, not strangers here.

September 2nd, 2010 at 12:39 amthere is such thing as a mini dach, as well as ones that are considered tweenies, and standard size sorry had to get that in for the know it alls, i researched this breed heavily before i bought mine.have him checked for skin allergies, allergies and skin problems can happen in this breed you should only have to give him 1 bath a month in the winter and 2 a month in the summer, it could also be a yeast infection brewing somewhere, as mine was just treated for one in his ears and it made him smell pretty funky they can also get it on there skin., if it is his ears a little advice as this is your first one when you get done bathing him wipe the inside of ear out with a cotton ball. as you are a new owner you really should get a decent book on this breed as they can also have other complications like back problems and they are great reference guides for a new owner.hope this helps
